Whenever you deliver mail you always encounter a set of numbers or digits
affixed right after or before a designated address, these are called postal
codes. Postal codes are those commonly used for mail purposes and to sort
out the city. A post code can contain numbers, letters, or a mixed of the
two depending on the country.
Introduced
in the country in 1967, the Postmaster General’s Department exchanged
and made a new postal code prior to the old postal codes used. In Australia,
only digits are in postcodes and consist of four numbers. The post codes in
the country usually show up after the last part of the address. They are fixed
and administered by the Australian Post. Here is an example of an address with
a postcode attached: “Bennelong Point, Sydney NSW 2000 Australia”
The City
Postcode website is an easy resource when looking for a specific postal
code. You can search by city and state or simply enter in the name of the city
and hit the search button the postal code will be presented just below the
search field. Some postcodes in the country only serve a suburb or a small
population, while some also cover a wide range of population or a city. Various
addresses have codes that are low such as 0250 and others reach up to 9999.
And because the codes don’t fit to all the address in Australia, a single
postcode sometimes covers two different places.
The codes
for the capitals of each state in Australia always end with a zero and are
the lowest in the range of their state. Here are the corresponding codes for
each capital of the 8 states; Sydney of New South Wales is 2000, Canberra of
Australian Capital Territory is 2600, Melbourne of Victoria is 3000, Brisbane
of Queensland is 4000, while Adelaide of South Australia is 5000, Perth of
Western Australia is 6000, Hobart in Tasmania is 7000, and lastly Darwin of
the Northern Territory is 0800.
Nowadays,
post codes hold many purposes aside from using it as an address for the post.
An example to this is that many businesses including the various insurance
companies such as liability insurance and health insurance companies
use postcodes to compute them. Another is bus transport uses postcodes to determine
the address they will go to and where they will stop.
So generally
speaking, by using the City Postcode website
and learn the postcodes in Australia, you can easily locate a certain address
and won’t have any problem getting lost.
